In 2017, the all-woman collective Les Amazones d’Afrique launched themselves to the world with their debut album, Republique Amazone. The songs showcased the group’s two signatures: intoxicating, danceable rhythms and a message calling out violence and different types of mistreatment of ladies all around the globe.

Their second album, known as Amazones Energy was launched Friday, and it builds on a lot of those self same themes. The group has grown since final time, with the core of ladies with roots in West Africa now supplemented by a global mixture of women and men.

NPR’s Michel Martin spoke to Niariu and Fafa Ruffino, two of the celebs of the collective, about why they needed to be a part of the challenge and their private connections to the social points they sing about on the album. Hearken to the total dialog within the participant above.
